annual revenue. Levi Strauss, his mother and two sisters came to New York City
from Germany in 1847. He joined his two brothers in their dry goods business and

California Gold Rush, Strauss convinced his brothers to provide goods for him to
sell in San Francisco.
Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, Strauss opened his own dry goods
business selling canvas, boots and clothing to general stores in the area.
Legend has it that a miner asked Strauss for pants that would hold up under
tough working conditions. He went to work and created pants out of canvas that
received strong approval, but some miners complained of chafing. Strauss

Jacob Davis was a Latvian immigrant who worked as a tailor in Reno, Nevada.
He purchased supplies from Strauss on a regular basis. Davis began incorporating
metal rivets at the corners of the pockets and button fly to strengthen the
pants. The process was so successful that Davis decided to patent it, but he
lacked the financial resources to do so. He contacted Strauss about his idea and
Strauss decided to fund the patent application process and they would share the
patent. In May 1873, U.S. patent 139121 for "Improvement in Fastening
Pocket-Openings" was granted to the two men opening the way for the manufacture
of Levi jeans. Davis headed to San Francisco where he helped Strauss manufacture
the new "waist overalls" which were marketed under the brand name "XX". Nine

waist overalls. The overalls had the iconic stitching on the back pocket, a
